A Growth Mindset

Change from scarcity thinking to an abundance mentality for continuous improvement.

During our Summer of Change series, we’ve discussed many obstacles that keep you from setting and reaching your goals. And, whether it’s your desire for approval or your fear of the unknown, one thing all barriers have in common is mindset.

Henry Ford famously said, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t—you’re right.”

Scarcity versus abundance.

Your attitude, (subconscious) beliefs, and internal and external narration are some of the greatest factors that determine success or failure. What are you saying to yourself when you reflect on a change you want to make?

Are you encouraging? Is your message full of hope and self-compassion? Do you aim low because you consider yourself unworthy or believe there are only a limited number of resources?

It’s time to slip on some rose-colored glasses. Here are a few professional differentiators (and benefits) that happen when you shift from a scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset.

Improved collaboration: Those with a scarcity mindset hoard ideas and resources out of fear that the “competition” will take what should be theirs. While people with an abundance mindset are generous to share and support because they (correctly) view cooperation as a win-win.

Increased gratitude and happiness: It’s easier to maintain a positive outlook by focusing on what you have and what’s going well in your life. That’s why appreciation is a hallmark of the abundance mindset. In contrast, individuals with a scarcity mindset ruminate about what they lack, which leads to a cycle of dissatisfaction.

An influx of opportunities: While those with a scarcity mindset hesitate to take risks and lose their “portion,” individuals with an abundance mindset view the world as full of possibilities. They see setbacks as temporary and opportunities as plentiful.

Three small steps to help make the mental switch.

1. Notice, interrupt, and redirect automatic thoughts. Retrain your brain to always expect the best case scenario. When scarcity seeps in, recognize it and visualize putting the thought in a shredder. Then, reframe it in abundance.

Example: “Why should I even bother? I’ll just be disappointed because I can never catch a good break.” (Cue the screechy shredding sound). “Of course, this will work out. I’m due for something amazing, I deserve it, and it’ll be easier than expected.”

2. Keep an intention and gratitude log. Every morning, write down three things you’re grateful for and two “hopes” for your upcoming day. Be specific! Every few days, re-read what you wrote previously and watch your success and satisfaction soar!

Example: I’m grateful for my healthy children, the beautiful summer weather, and that my sister is coming over for dinner tonight. I look forward to signing the family I have a 1:00pm meeting with and receiving a promising resume for my marketing coordinator position.

3. Give back and celebrate with others. Prove to yourself that there’s more than enough to go around. Be a resource for someone else by sharing your time, knowledge, experience, creativity, or money. When you witness success, override feelings of envy by expressing your congratulations.

Example: Is this another new nanny agency opening up in the neighborhood? I remember how intimidating it was to be the new agency in the area. Maybe I can walk over and introduce myself with a box of chocolates and a business card.
