Why Change is Good for You.
A tiny caterpillar instinctually crawls into its cocoon trusting that life will improve for them on the other side, but things get significantly worse before they get better.
The little crawler thinks they're about to take a nap, but instead completely dissolves! That’s right—it becomes caterpillar soup!
Then, it slowly and gradually reconfigures itself until things start to look up… way up.
Finally, one day, the caterpillar is a caterpillar no more. It breaks through its shell, out of the darkness, and flies into a whole new world as one of the most beautiful creatures on Earth.
Do you think the butterfly is concerned about how difficult the change process was or looks back with regret? No, and that’s exactly the point.
Last week, we confronted fear and workshopped how we can normalize change. Today, for the next act in our Summer of Change series, we’re going to uncover why change is good for you.
Here are some direct benefits that change brings to your life.
Flexibility & Resilience: Successfully navigating change builds emotional strength. Conquering difficulties is empowering and enhances your ability to adapt to different situations and environments. This makes you more robust when facing change in the future, which breeds success and builds resilience.
“I moved to a city where I didn’t know a soul before and made new friends, and I can rebuild a support network again in the childcare industry.”
Fresh Perspectives: Who hasn’t gotten stuck on autopilot? Change breaks you free from your rut, offering new insights, opening your mind, and expanding your views. It can also lead to self-discovery by unearthing strengths, interests, and passions.
“I was sad to lose my admin, but I had no idea I had a knack for (and very much enjoy) digital marketing.”
Personal Satisfaction: Achieving goals through change can bring a sense of fulfillment and pride. These wins can snowball, leading to emotional, physical, and financial improvements, as well as healthier relationships and greater overall happiness.
“Now that I’ve stopped reading emails during evening hours to protect myself from burnout, I think I’ll start going for short walks after supper, too.”
Increased Self-Confidence: We know self-doubt is the biggest barrier of change. By overcoming it, change shows you what you’re made of and proves that what doesn’t kill you absolutely makes you stronger. Overcoming challenges associated with change puts you in warrior mode, boosting your self-esteem.
“I’ve lost some big clients this year, but I started this business with zero customers and know I can get through anything.”
Skill Development: Necessity is the mother of invention and change forces you to broaden your knowledge and experiences. You’ll learn new skills and sharpen existing ones, frequently turbo-charging your proficiency in a variety of competencies.
“Having to pitch our agency throughout the community has made me realize I’m a much better salesperson than I thought.”
Creativity & Innovation: It’s normal to slide into mundane routines, but change is motivating and makes life more exciting. You have to be creative when going through change. This encourages you to find new ideas and solutions by thinking outside the box.
“Designing our agency’s housesitting packages led to a eureka moment about incorporating a seamless way families can add on pet care.”
Heightened Empathy: Going through change can feel like walking a mile in someone else’s shoes. Instead of in the abstract—which is always easier said than done—you understand how challenging it can be to overcome certain obstacles. This inevitably makes you more compassionate by seeing things from different vantage points.
“I underestimated how lonely entrepreneurship could feel and will be more intentional about asking for and giving support to others.”
